Laissez les bons temps roulez!
Let the good times roll at UWM’s Mardi Gras Spectacular on Fat Tuesday, Feb. 21, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Union Ballroom, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd.
New this year, we’ve teamed up with Dead Man’s Carnival and their house band, The Magnificents, to bring you the magic, music and mystique of Mardi Gras, including circus acts, stunts, fortune-telling, caricature-drawing, face-painting, Tarot card readings and authentic New Orleans cuisine, right here in the UWM Union. (View pictures from last year’s Mardia Gras below.)
The afternoon kicks off with UWM’s renowned Jazz Ensemble, 12 to 1 p.m. At 1:30 p.m., the fun erupts throughout the Union in a parade featuring floats, masks and costumes. All are welcome to join in the procession by participating in the open float-making workshops at the Studio Arts and Crafts Centre or the mask-making activity in the Union Concourse on Monday, Feb. 20 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the best student floats (1st place – $100 UWM gold card; 2nd place – $75 gold card; 3rd place – $50 gold card).
Student Association President Angela Lang presides over the festivities as Queen of Mardi Gras and serves as one of the student judges of the float contest. Works by student artists, including the UWM Print Club and members of the Studio Arts and Crafts Centre, will be available for purchase, and displayed on fence panels a la New Orleans’ Jackson Square. The Mardi Gras Spectacular is free and open to the public, and brought to you by UWM Union Programming and Union Sociocultural Programming.
