Andi Zeisler explores ‘Beyond Bitches, Bimbos and Ballbreakers’ March 28

By Beth Stafford on March 22, 2012

UWM’s “Heroines and Hellions” series is rocking the campus this spring with musical events, speakers, art, films, theatrical performances, activism and more, sparking new conversations about women’s identities, images in contemporary culture, power and sexualities.

On Wednesday, March 28, the series features An Evening with Andi Zeisler and her presentation “Beyond Bitches, Bimbos and Ballbreakers: Why Media is Key to Moving Conversations about Women and Gender Forward.”

    Andi Zeisler

The presentation is at 7 p.m. in the UWM Union, Wisconsin Room, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd. Zeisler, co-founder of Bitch magazine and author of Feminism and Pop Culture, will look critically at recurring scripts in media and pop culture: “Women’s unhappiness is feminism’s fault. Powerful women are either scary or crazy. Women are making men obsolete.” She also will address the ways consumers can demand a more balanced perspective. For information about the presentation, phone 414-229-3111.

UWM sponsors include Union Programming, Union Sociocultural Programming, Women’s Resource Center, Women’s Studies Program and the LGBT Resource Center.

For more information on upcoming events in the series, visit www.heroinesandhellions.uwm.edu or contact the Women’s Resource Center at 414-229-2852.
