5,000 new students, over 100 events, Fall Welcome 2012 is on

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee kicks off the academic year with over 100 Fall Welcome events, from boat tours, to ice skating on Spaights Plaza, to Panther tailgating, to a luau-inspired fest, with events starting on Tuesday, Aug. 28.

Fall Welcome is a series of events to welcome nearly 5,000 new students and welcome back over 24,000 continuing students. Whether this is a student’s first week or even fourth year at UWM, Fall Welcome offers something for everyone.

Below are highlighted events students will not want to miss. Keep track of all the events with the Fall Welcome calendar.

Thursday, Aug. 30

Arts Curious, Spaights Plaza, 5–7 p.m.
Start the academic year celebrating the Year of the Arts, commemorating the Peck School of the Arts’ 50th anniversary. Free food, live music, a mural painting and special giveaways.

Rec Center Retro ’90s Night, Union Rec Center, 8 p.m.–midnight
Play billiards and bowl while experiencing the best of the ’90s music, fashion, food and more.

Friday, Aug. 31

Milwaukee Boat Tours, Union Circle Drive, 1–2:30 p.m. and 2:30–4:30 p.m.
Relax on a boat and enjoy the scenery of Lake Michigan and the City of Milwaukee. Space is limited to 140 students per tour.

Fall Welcome Luau, Chapman Hall lawn, 5–7 p.m.
A luau-inspired dinner with entertainment, drinks and grilled veggies and meat. Open to all faculty, staff, students and families.

Rock Your World: Five Thing to do Every Day for Success, Union Ballroom, 7–8:30 p.m.
Dayna Steele, author, blogger and radio personality, will share her secrets to success from years of working with, interviewing and researching rock stars.

Saturday, Sept. 1

Cool Down, Spaights Plaza, 1–5 p.m.
Today only, Spaights Plaza will be transformed into an outdoor ice-skating rink and pedal-cart racetrack.

Bike Milwaukee, Klotsche Center, 1 p.m.
Discover trails and parts of Milwaukee by bike. Participants can bring their own bikes and helmets, or can borrow them from Outdoor Pursuits, free of charge.

Get Naked, Union Ballroom, 8 p.m.
Laugh along with Harlan Cohen, comedian and author of New York Times bestseller “The Naked Roommate.”

Sunday, Sept. 2

Panther Tailgate, Engelmann Stadium, 1:30–3 p.m.
Free music, food, T-shirts and more at this tailgate. Cheer on the men’s soccer team at 3 p.m.

Get REC’d, Klotsche Center & Pavilion and Union Rec Center, 7 p.m.–midnight
It’s a rec fest with recreation, fitness, outdoor and sports activities.

Target Bus Adventure, Sandburg Halls, 9:30 and 10:30 p.m.
UWM students will have exclusive access to Target on Miller Park Way from 10 p.m. to midnight.

Monday, Sept. 3

Milwaukee Art Museum Trip, Union Circle Drive, 1–4 p.m.
Free admission to the Milwaukee Art Museum and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Posters of Paris exhibit. Space is limited to 40 students.

Mind Candy, Union Wisconsin Room, 7:30 p.m.
Wayne Hoffman’s show “Mind Candy” combines mind reading and visual illusions.

Tuesday, Sept. 4

Opening Day, various campus locations, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Stop by “Ask Me Tents” across campus for treats and advice, and pose for the camera.

Wednesday, Sept. 5

Panther Resource Fair, Spaights Plaza, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Connect with UWM departments and staff who will help you and support your college success.

Thursday, Sept. 6

Academic Welcome Day, various campus locations, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Connect with the 14 schools and colleges and many departments at UWM.

Friday, Sept. 7

PANTHERFEST Preshow, Chapman Hall lawn, 3–6 p.m.
PANTHERFEST celebration kicks off on campus, featuring giant trampolines, henna tattoos, joust, carnival games, free food and a climbing wall.

PANTHERFEST, Marcus Amphitheater, 8 p.m.
