Wisconsin’s
Smoke – Free Air Act may have passed
in 2010, but tobacco issues are still on the radar for local activists. On
Monday, March 25th, 2013 at Stonefly Brewery (735 E. Center St.),
the City of Milwaukee Tobacco – Free
Alliance
is hosting ‘Eat and Greet: A
City of Milwaukee Tobacco-Free Alliance Networking Event’
, from 5:00 p.m. –
6:30 p.m.

Dr. Barbara
Moser
, Director of Health
Promotion and Wellness and Quality Improvement Norris Health Center
UW-Milwaukee, will be honored with an award for her years of leadership in
tobacco prevention and control. Also expected to be in attendance are local
State Representatives Mandela
Barnes
(D – Milwaukee) and Leon Young (D -
Milwaukee).

The
timing of the Tobacco – Free Alliance’s networking event is key, as state
budget hearings are set to take place around the state in coming weeks. Tobacco
Prevention and Control program funding is far from the optimal levels needed to
combat tobacco related disparities in Milwaukee communities and beyond. In a
recent report, Wisconsin
received an ‘F’
for Tobacco Prevention
and Control Funding
and Smoking Cessation,
which are funded at only 8% of the amount recommended by the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention.

The
upcoming event will be a chance for advocates to share their work around
tobacco prevention with other professionals and community leaders. There will
also be opportunities to become involved with the initiative and participate in
on-site activities to “tell your story” about the harms of tobacco.

Eat
and Greet
welcomes attendees to bring family, friends
and co-workers to network and celebrate tobacco prevention work done by
advocates all over the city. Refreshments will be provided, courtesy of the alliance
and Community Advocates
Public Policy Institute
