UWM student featured in national campaign

Two UWM students are featured in a new national campaign about public housing.

A Highland Homes education program, run by Darrell Finch, a student in the School of Education, is mentioned in the opening video on the site ReThink Housing.org.

Finch is an education specialist for the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM). The education initiative he leads is designed to help parents help their children complete high school and succeed beyond that. (Read more of Darrell’s story).

Sayvon Friend, a student in UWM’s Peck School of the Arts who was encouraged by Finch’s program, is featured in the “Fosters Education” section of the website videos. Finch’s education initiative is also shown on camera, with a brief glimpse of Finch. The public service announcements are being televised nationally, and can also be viewed on the Web site.

Friend talks about how the education initiative at Highland Homes kept him on the right track to become the first in his immediate family to go to college. “I know where I wanted to be; I just needed a push.”

The sections of the campaign featuring Friend on campus and at the UWM Libraries were filmed here in April.
