The Peck School of the Arts production of Ravel’s “L’enfant et les sortileges” is a grand collaboration between Milwaukee Opera Theatre and UWM’s Voice Program, Symphony Orchestra and Dance Department. The story will be brought to life Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14 and 15, by an army of singers, an orchestra and…puppets.
The director is Jill Anna Ponasik, producing artistic director of Milwaukee Opera Theatre, and music director is Kerry Hart Bieneman, UWM adjunct assistant professor of music. Jun Kim, assistant professor of music and director of orchestral activities, conducts the UWM Symphony Orchestra. Artistic design is by Edward Winslow, general manager of Hudson Vagabond Puppets. Choreography is by Christina Briggs-Winslow, Annette Grefig, Edward Winslow and Joelle Worm.
“Not only is this the first opera at UWM that includes an orchestra, but we will be performing it in French, with English subtitles,” says Bieneman. “Another unique aspect is the exclusive use of reused and recycled materials for our props, set pieces and costumes. As our puppeteer and production designer, Edward Winslow has created a fresh perspective on performing an opera. It will truly be like nothing you’ve ever seen!”
“L’enfant et les sortileges” will be presented in the Helen Bader Concert Hall of the Zelazo Center. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $17/general public and $15/seniors and UWM faculty and st
