The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Information Studies (SOIS) is sponsoring an IT United Technology Career Fair on Tuesday, April 29, 5-7:30 p.m., in the UWM Student Union Wisconsin Room, 2200 East Kenwood Blvd.
United Way of Greater Milwaukee is hosting the career fair, which was created to educate high school students about the technology industry, and to encourage them to pursue careers in technology. More than 130 students are expected to attend the fair, which features round table discussions with IT professionals and technology demonstrations by leading technology companies. The UWM App Brewery is among the scheduled presenters.
More than 20 UWM SOIS students will be serving as ambassadors at the event, introducing the high school students to the university. Academic advisers from SOIS will also be available to discuss high school requirements and the college application process.
This is the first year UWM has been involved with the IT United Technology Career Fair. “This event is a good fit for UWM, allowing SOIS students to connect with the community, the IT volunteers and business people in the field,” says Julie Walker, an SOIS placement adviser working with the SOIS student volunteers.
“The IT United volunteers come from all over Milwaukee, and it’s a good place to network with those professionals as well as helping the high school students.”
“There is a huge demand for IT professionals in the job market. This is a great opportunity for students in Milwaukee,” said Kerrie Hoffman, vice president of information technology at Johnson Controls. “Having access to technology based jobs will be critical for succeeding in the technology based economy of the future.
“Through the annual IT United Technology Career Fair, we are encouraging Milwaukee area students to develop an interest in these family-supporting IT jobs, and giving them advice on how to prepare for and succeed in these careers.”
In addition to SOIS, companies participating in the career fair include Google, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Microsoft, and the Milwaukee Brewers . Members of the IT United volunteers are:
