The UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena is the new name for the Milwaukee Arena.
The change was announced Thursday, June 26, by Wisconsin Center District Chairman Franklyn M. Gimbel and UWM Interim Chancellor Mark Mone. The Wisconsin Center District owns and operates the Arena and the adjacent Milwaukee Theater, both in the 500 block of W. Kilbourn Ave. in downtown Milwaukee.
“We are pleased that UWM has agreed to further partner with us in this long-term agreement,” said Gimbel. “This partnership will benefit both of our organizations and the downtown Milwaukee community as a whole.”
Mone says the agreement helps underscore UWM’s role as the region’s leading university with nearly 28,000 students and 5,000 employees. “Having UWM’s name on the downtown arena is an important symbol of our deep commitment to the City of Milwaukee and the entire region,” he said. “It fits well with our strategic plan to enhance the university’s brand and to further position UWM as Milwaukee’s University.”
The agreement is for $3.4 million will continue from 2014 through 2024. At UWM’s option the agreement may be further extended to 2029.
Mone emphasized that no tax dollars will be used for the marketing and sponsorship initiative. The program will be financed by funds generated by non-academic programming at the university and UWM Foundation resources.
The UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena, previously known as the U.S. Cellular Arena, has been the home for most UWM Panther Men’s Basketball games over the past decade. Red and blue spectator seats will be replaced with black and gold seats, and a new overhead scoreboard with UWM signage will be installed.
